The program began in the second half of the year in the state of Pará, one of the places where, according to Reuters, deforestation is occurring at an accelerated pace. It is there that COTI (Certification of Origin and Traceability Implementation Initiative) started the leather traceability pilot project with a network of companies. Large companies in the sector have yet to join, but COTI has already traced 113,000 pieces so far and hopes to reach 200,000 by January.

The background to this initiative is the European regulation banning the import of goods and products originating from deforested areas, including leather. "Soon, our European customers will be able to enter a code on a platform," comments Ivens Domingos, sustainability director at Durli Leathers, in an interview with Reuters, "and have access to all the information about the animal from which the product is derived." The promoters' ambition is to expand the network of participating companies and take COTI beyond the borders of Pará. According to Roberto Paulinelli, director of Frigorifico Rio Maria (a meat processing company), the initiative could be replicated elsewhere."
